Danny Larsen: Twilight Of A Day: presented by RedHouse Gallery
Inaugural London exhibition by Norway's rising star
Twilight Of A Day' is the first London solo exhibition by celebrated Norwegian artist Danny Larsen. Opening from 11th - 17th June at 8 Duke Street, in the heart of the city's historic art district, this new collection will include some of the artist's most ambitious and sophisticated paintings to date.
Exquisitely detailed works in Larsen's 'neo pointillist' style will celebrate the emergence of spring and offer visitors "an opportunity to enjoy a moment of calm within the bustling urban landscape". Atmospheric depictions of the artist's homeland will go on view alongside imagery drawn from recent trips to China and Uganda.
There is a deep sense of 'presence' within the paintings, many of which were created at Larsen's new studio in Hønefoss, in Norway's Ringerike district. It was here, almost 150 years before, where Edvard Munch painted, whilst his father was working as military doctor.
Larsen: "From where I have my easels standing, I have a direct view to the building where Munch painted 'Infirmary at Helgelandsmoen' in 1884. It is quite something to think that the pine trees I walk under are the same that he walked under. It feels like he was here, sketching last week, looking at the same world that I look at every day."
Larsen's hypnotic canvasses celebrate the beauty and power of nature, simultaneously embracing the darkness whilst finding the light within. A fascination with the natural world is intrinsic to his practice; seeking out treasure within the ordinary and crystalising apparently unremarkable experiences as moments of glory.
"I am completely fine with people seeing these as 'landscape paintings', but to me these are more like the moments where I can see the world. I've been struggling with pretty heavy depression since I was a little kid, and I've had to teach myself how to see the world in a positive way. My paintings are just those moments where I can see that light." - Danny Larsen
