Featuring 100 international works, including paintings by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham

Hampstead Art Society presents its fifth annual summer exhibition - featuring works by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912 - 2004). The curated group exhibition comprising 100 international works celebrates a diverse collection of contemporary artists.

Opening on July 6th, the exhibition will showcase the vitality of figurative art, with works on view spanning from Japan to the U.S.A. including countries: Italy, Georgia, South Korea and the U.K. The yearly open call for artists has attracted submissions from a total of 94 countries to date. Selected works will be shown alongside three paintings on loan from

the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust.

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912 - 2004) was one of Britain's most significant 20th century artists. Born in Scotland, she spent much of her working life in St. Ives, where her career began as a prominent member of the post-war St. Ives group. She was inspired by nature, her travels, and was an exceptional colourist. Her work crossed over from figuration to pure abstraction, leaving a legacy of bold, distinctive and joyous paintings that emerged not only from observation but also from her inner vision. Recently her work is enjoying a burst of high-profile interest, with the documentary A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things by Mark Cousins released in 2024 and a planned retrospective at Tate St. Ives due in 2026. Director of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust, Rob Airey, will also be participating in a Q&A organised by Hampstead Art Society in St. James's on July 10th.

At the private view on July 7th, the Henrion Award will be decided by a panel that includes: Plum Cloutman (1995) - winner of the Catriona White Prize, and the Lyon and Turnbull Prize; James Lloyd (1971) - First Prize in the BP Portrait Award, and the Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture, whose work is displayed at the National Portrait Gallery; Joshua Press

(1988) - former artist in residence at Cob Gallery, founder of the North London Group; Tom Marsh (1976) - Associate member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Antony Williams (1964) - Winner of the Ondaatje Prize, First Prize in the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award (2024).

Founder of Hampstead Art Society, Mari Tskiria comments: "Our reputation for supporting emerging artists, alongside a widening pool of incredible established talents has made Hampstead Art Society an appealing beacon for figurative arts. We promise an exciting and refreshing exhibition, curated with deep attention to detail. This year is particularly special for the inclusion of three paintings by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, whose works are at the heart of the summer exhibition.
