Emily Patrick | A Collection of Paintings 2023-2025: A Collection of Recent Paintings 2023-2025
An exhibition of tender and optimistic paintings. Emily Patrick's first show in three years.
Nature is Patrick's prime subject and first love. "If I can paint a painting that can show nature in a way that explains the poetry one feels when walking into it," she writes, "then I can help to bring that nature into a person's home." It's a world where people can linger and have their spirits refreshed.
The brushwork is a joy to read. It is always purposeful, and with so many moods. Sometimes the brush traces the finest lines, moving with delicacy, almost timidity. At other times it is joyful, celebratory or even abandoned.
There are remarkable abstract foundations to each painting. Her colour sings, the composition rests and the texture intrigues. The work can equally be enjoyed by lovers of abstract as figurative art.
Patrick is acknowledged as a poet in her field. These beautiful, figurative paintings speak in a universal language, and she has followers around the globe.
Most of the paintings are in oil on panel but some of them have unusual surfaces: fragments of satinwood, worn roof slates and a drawing board still-scarred. These surfaces themselves, that have often done other work, now find themselves hosting new images.
The paintings extend out onto their frames, each one individually made, sometimes from salvaged scraps, others from more traditional composite sections, gilded and gessoed.
So much individual attention, love and compassion is infectious. The work inspires us to care more and love more. It is uplifting.
